Counseling Staff

The Multi-Tiered Support System Team seeks to bring multiple parties to the table in a problem-solving effort to aid a struggling student. Parents, teachers, counselors, administrators and other educational consultants join together to:

• Identify the student’s issue (academic or behavioral)
• Investigate the background
• Analyze the data
• Propose interventions
• Review the success of the interventions
• Adjust as necessary until the problem is remedied

Counselors often serve as a point of access to the SIT process for families of our students. Please call your child’s counselor for a more detailed explanation to see if the SIT process is appropriate for your concerns.

Counselors assist in the transitions from elementary and on into high school. They assist with tasks such as forgotten locker combinations or can call for a custodian if a jammed locker refuses to cooperate. In a greater sense counselors operate in the three domains of social/emotional, academic and career/vocational. Counselors offer individual and group counseling and make referrals to outside agencies when the process is beyond what they can offer in terms of length of treatment or the level of expertise. They often serve as a link between families and their student’s respective teachers. They provide vocational guidance from the Career Cruising tools and support the district’s Career Expo for eighth-graders.

When enrolling a student new to Olathe School District, please bring the following:

• Current proof of residency (lease, utility bill, driver’s license or other official document that shows current residency)
• Birth certificate
• Immunization records
